My comfy pyjama bottoms from good 'ole Marks and Spencer are great with contrasting hems and pockets, they're very light cotton with an unrestricting elasticated waist band.
Project... copy them in a more appealing fabric at a cheaper price. Fabric used: metre of 45" cotton with half a metre of constrasting fabric for pockets, pocket bias binding, waistband and hems. Tie at front is optional.
I measured with as much accuracy as possible all parts and transferred the measurements to a lightweight wallpaper lining.
All pattern pieces cut and ready to go.
The first step was to sew the pocket linings right sides together from top, along rounded bottom and stop at side.
Before sewing the outer sides of each leg together I sewed the bias binding to the angled side of the pocket so that it could be stitched into the side seam.
After having stictched both pockets in place and both sides of each leg together I turned one leg through to right side with the other leg remaining inside out. I inserted one leg inside the other and stitched all the way around the curved seam.
Very pleased so far... having turned them right side out I tried them on for size... perfect.... huge sigh of relief! Also very pleased with the pockets and the contrasting seams.
Next step... the elasticated waistband. With right sides together I sewed the waistband to the bottoms and then pressed the waistband in half so as to make a casing for the elastic, leaving a 2" gap to insert the elastic.
Tada! Wasitband went very well and the bottom constrasting fabric was attached much the same way as the waistband but without the elastic.
All in all it probably took me much longer than expected but that was mainly because without any instructions to go by I simply couldn't get my head around how the pockets went together. Just one of those things where you end up standing for an unreasonably long period of time trying to work it out!
Will definitely make them again which will hopefully be a lot quicker next time. Also, I was pleased that considering they are trousers I got away with just 1.5 metres.
